How To Seal Concrete, Types of Concrete Sealers Explained

Concrete is a porous material that can easily absorb liquids, oils, acids and other contaminants.

These substances can stain, soften and break down concrete floors. The best solution to prevent concrete damage is to properly seal it. There are 100s of sealers on the market which can be broken down into 3 main categories:

Topical Concrete Sealers

Topical sealers include urethanes, acrylics, epoxies, and polyaspartics which tend to sit on top of the surface of the concrete and they adhere via a mechanical bond. Since they are not fully united with the surface they can delaminate or scratch easily. Many of them also yellow over time.

Penetrating Concrete Sealers

Penetrating concrete sealers are most commonly made from silanes or siloxanes that sink into the concrete and fill the pores making the concrete more resistant to staining. While they are harder and denser than most topical sealers they tend to require more frequent application as they degrade more quickly over time.

Hybrid Concrete Sealers

Hybrid sealers such as the RexShield family of products both penetrate into the concrete while also creating an ultra-hard crystalline topical layer on the surface of the concrete. This completely eliminates staining from acids like mustard, wine and vinegar while also showing a powerful chemical resistance to acetone, brake fluids, grease and a wide variety of corrosive materials. It does not delaminate as it adheres via a powerful covalent bond and it is completely inorganic so it will never yellow.

Before application the concrete is either thoroughly cleaned or cut to the desired finish level.

RexPro’s ProSeal concrete sealing system is engineered as a two coat process. The first coat is rolled on to fill the pores and inconsistencies in the concrete. It is applied in an even pattern to ensure a uniform finish. It can also be sprayed. Within 30-40 minutes the first coat will be completely dry and ready for the second coat to be applied.  This second coat is first sprayed to create a well distributed mist over the surface. The wet material is then spread across the surface with a microfiber flat mop to create a beautiful even finish that will protect the concrete for years to come.

The surface is ready for light use within 4 hours.

The surface is ready for light use within 4 hours. After 5 days there is virtually no chemical that can have any effect on the sheen, hardness or color of the concrete
