While epoxy is a durable surfacing material it can quickly lose its luster and become scratched and dull. There are a number of products on the market today that are used as a top coat to protect epoxy but the various drawbacks inherent to these conventional solutions have left contractors and building owners seeking for a more reliable choice.
Traditional Approach
Traditional Approach to Epoxy Top Coats – Urethane
Urethanes have been the predominant choice up until recently to protect the finish of epoxy floors.
While urethanes do a good job of this some of the complaints that contractors and owners have are the following:
- The once smooth and shiny epoxy gets an orange peel texture from the urethane
- It is not as hard and scratch resistant as was hoped for
- It leaves an uneven film which changes the color of the epoxy
- It can be prone to staining and marring from “hot tire pick up”
- It is topical and does not penetrate into the epoxy providing a relatively week bond and reduced overall hardness

Benefits of the RexShield Epoxy Top Coat
The RexShield family of products offers a number of products that can be applied over Epoxy to create a glossy, satin or matte finish. Unlike urethane products, RexShield is an inorganic material that will offer many benefits for your epoxy floors.
Urethane top coats are typically applied over an epoxy base coat with a roller or sprayer. If you’re using a roller, you’ll want to make sure that the urethane top coat is designed for roller application.
While urethanes offer an improvement over epoxy alone, a common complaint is that they can create an “orange peel” effect on top of the smoother epoxy floors. In addition, urethanes are only moderately hard, abrasion and scratch resistant.
